Fausto Amaro

Fausto Amaro has a PhD in Social Sciences (Sociology) at the University of Lisbon. The doctoral degree was awarded in 2001, having presented a thesis on “Social and Cultural Factors of Schizophrenia”. Following the doctorate, he belonged to the faculty of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon as an assistant professor. In 2010 he obtained the title of aggregate in Sociology and became a full professor of the same university. At the Institute of Social and Political Sciences he coordinated the area of Social Work and Social Policy. Currently, his main interests are Sociology of the Family, Sociology of Communication, Sociology of Aging, Methodology of Scientific Research, Sociology of Mental Disorders, HIV/AIDS, Criminology and Conflict Mediation. At the Technical University of Lisbon (currently University of Lisbon) he served as President of CAPP – Centre for Administration and Public Policy (classification: excellent).

He was a member of the Board of SOPCOM – Sociedade Portuguesa de Cie^ncias da Comunicação [Portuguese Society of Communication Sciences] and President of the Portuguese Society of Suicidology (2015-23). He was vice-rector of academic coordination of the Atlantic University and rector of the same University. He was President of the Atlantic University School; President of the Atlantic Health School; and President of ISAVE – Higher Institute of Health (2021-23). He was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Commission Against AIDS and was part of the “Monitoring Commission of the population affected by fires, regarding the response that should be ensured in the mental health component¿ (2016/2017). He received the Santanter Award – Totta/Technical University of Lisbon (2012) for the impact of his publications; and the Dr. Champalimaud Award – Social Sciences (2004) for his article on HIV/AIDS: “Risk Perception of HIV/AIDS and sexual behaviour in Portugal”. International Journal of STD & AIDS. 15:56-60. He received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy (2019). He is currently a member of the administration of ISAVE – Higher Institute of Health, and a consultant for several organizations in Portugal and Brazil. He is Vice-president of the Geographical Society of Lisbon and member of several scientific associations such as: The Portuguese Association of Sociology; International Sociological Association, The Portuguese Society of Communication Sciences; The Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health; and The American Psychological Association.
